The four sciences are :

1. The science of hadith, its chain of transmission and its matn (the hadith itself).
2. The science of the narrators ('ilm ar-rijaal).
3. The science of hadith verification ('ilm at-takhreej).
4. The science of explanation of hadith (‘ilm sharh al-hadith).
